The site is situated in the picturesque place on the left bank of the Volga. In the territory of 160 hectares there are some man-made lakes which appeared in the place of peatbog, and a pinewood. A zoo is primarily the all-year-round specialised park complex for family and educational leisure, where Yaroslavl citizens and tourists will receive cultural and educational services. A zoo is a museum of wild nature, where visitors have ideal conditions to watch animals' behaviour in the conditions closest to natural. The zoo will become an experimental laboratory for school and college students and specialists (biologists, dendrologists, landscape designers, foresters). The basic part of the exposition should be done according to the locality principle - showing animals typical of the Yaroslavl Region, Central and NorthWestern regions of Russia (wolves, bears, foxes, elks etc.). The tours around the zoo should be organised according to topical seasonal guidelines. One of the expositions will be a peasant's household with domestic animals and fowls, where one will be able to feed and pet them. There will also be expositions of mammals, fish, birds and invertebrates. At present, a geodesic and topographic research is going on in order to define the exact area relief, so that the design of the future zoo could be worked out.
CULTURAL-EDUCATIONAL CENTRE NAMED AFTER THE FIRST WOMAN ASTRONAUT V.TERESHKOVA The complex will include the city planetarium, monument to the first woman astronaut Valentina V.Tereshkova, leisure area with children's attractions and amusements. The planetarium building should contain the planetarium hall itself, lecture and demonstration auditoriums, Internet-room, museum, administrative offices, club rooms and observatory. The will be facilities for disabled people. The area planned for the centre is situated in the Kirov District of Yaroslavl at the crossroads of Bolshaya Oktyabrskaya Street and Tchaikovsky Street, to utilise part of the former military plant. In the south the area borders on ensemble of churches of St.Nicholas parish and the former St.Nicholas barracks (a complex of military buildings formed by the late XIX century around the Yaroslavl Small Manufacture). According to the project of architectural monuments protection area, the territory planned for the centre is in the monument protection area, where only so-called compensatory construction is allowed. In the late XIX - early XX century there were private one-storied timber houses in this area. The project of revision of areas to be protected in this district specifies the borders of the monument protection zone, which places the territory in question in the strict regulation zone.
ST.TIKHON CHURCH The church under construction is named after St.Tikhon, the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, who was canonised by the Russian Orthodox Church Ecumenical Council in 1989. Tikhon was the head of the Yaroslavl eparchy for seven years and was proclaimed the Honorary Citizen of Yaroslavl. The territory for the construction of the church borders on Panin Street in the northwest, Leningradsky Avenue in the northeast, railway sanitary protection zone in the southwest and a road in the southeast. It is planned to build a church with the capacity of 1,500 people with the necessary facilities: the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God "Unexpected Joy" (already in existence), Sunday school, public Orthodox library with the belfry, Orthodox book shop, workshops with a garage, gas boiler room and guards room. The first stage of the construction is building the Church of St.Tikhon with two chapels, second stage - building the facilities and territory development. The buildings will have facilities for the disabled people. The Church of St.Tikhon is meant for holding services all year round. The architectural design and proportions of the church have been worked out in accordance with Russian church architecture of the XII-XIV centuries.
