Socio-economic situation As of January 1, 2007, there were 24.8 thousand companies and institutions registered in Yaroslavl (compared to 14.3 thousand in 1999), including 86.6% private entities, which is 1.5% more than on January 1, 2006. Traditionally, the leading place in the city economy belongs to processing industries, production and distribution of electric energy, gas and water, transport and communication, construction business, wholesale and retail trade. The economic potential of the city comprises 2,271 processing enterprises, 3,049 construction enterprises, 10,428 distributive trade companies, 1,107 transport and communication companies, 399 real estate, renting and servicing companies and 1,617 communal, social and personal service companies. The average number of people employed in the city economy through 12 months of 2006 was 335.7 thousand, which is 2.1% less than through 2005. The total number of officially registered unemployed by the end of the year was 2,275, with unemployment rate of 0.6%.
