Victor Vladimirovich Volonchunas, Mayor of Yaroslavl

He was born on June 19, 1949, in the village of Orlovo, the Yaroslavl Oblast. Started working in 1967 as an adjuster of radio equipment at the Yaroslavl Radio Plant. After the military service he returned to the plant and worked as a fitter and then as a training officer. Since 1974 he worked as a foreman and head foreman at SU No.5 of "Yarneftekhimstroy". In 1976 he graduated from the evening department of the Yaroslavl Polytechnic College, in 1997 he completed the course of the Russian Distance Learning of Finance and Economics Institute. From 1977 to 1988 he worked in the Communist Party official organs. In 1988 he was elected First Vice-Chairman and in 1989 Chairman of the Yaroslavl City Executive Committee. Since 1991 he has been Mayor of Yaroslavl. He is member of the Board of the Congress of Municipal Entities, President of the Union of Cities of North-Western Russia. Since 2001 has been a member of the Russian national delegation at the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities at the European Council. He is awarded the Order of Honour and some medals. In 1998 he was awarded the title of Honoured Construction Worker of the Russian Federation. In 2002 he became Honorary Citizen of Yaroslavl. He is married, has a son and a daughter.
